Hairdressing is embedded in my psyche. I grew up in my father’s salon and later worked as a stylist. These paintings are rooted in hairdressing images but aren’t about hairdressing. When painting, I allow myself to follow these familiar roots to unfamiliar places inside myself, letting my sensuality, delicacy, and vigour dominate each painting’s organic development. Inchoate parts of me seek expression and I try to link unknown, unconscious feelings with the movement of my hand. As with hairdressing, I use my fingers and brush handles as much as the brushes. The results are often carnal abstractions in muted colours.
