Geiriadur Kurnai Cymraeg / Kurnai Welsh Dictionary

Print sgrin llyfr, 26 tudalen / screenprint book, 26 pages, 29.5 x 21cm

This work was made in response to a sentence in Vanishing Voices (David Nettle and Suzanne Romaine, P 178-9):

"Grammars and dictionaries are artificial environments for languages. They reflect only a fraction of the diversity of a language in its everyday use and cannot capture the ever-changing nature of language."

Cafodd y geiriadur hwn ei greu er mwyn delweddu’r ystyr, yr hanes, y cof a’r wybodaeth mewn geiriau sy’n diflannu wrth i iaith farw neu wrthi iddi beidio â chael ei defnyddio. Mae cofnodi’r geiriau yn aml yn gallu arwain at gyfieithu gair am air ac mae ystyr cyflawn y geiriau a’r dull y caent eu defnyddio gan siaradwyr yn gallu mynd ar goll. Er mwyn ceisio ail-greu’r ystyr, mae’r geiriadur hwn yn creu delweddau gweledol o’r geiriau i gynorthwyo’r rhai nad ydynt yn siarad Gunnai/KÅrnai na Chymraeg i ddeall y gair.

This dictionary was created to visualise the meaning, history, memory and knowledge in words that disappear when a language becomes extinct or is no longer used. Recording the words can often result in a one-to-one translation and the full meaning and the way the words were used by the speakers can be lost. To attempt to recreate this meaning, this dictionary creates visual representations of the words to help the non-Gunnai/KÅrnai and Cymraeg speaker understand the word.
